Ottawa: German Ambassador and Forum of Federations President Sign Agreement on Pakistan Assistance Program
On September 30, 2009, Ambassador Witschel and Forum of Federations President George Anderson signed a contract to carry out a two-and-a-half year development assistance program in Pakistan. The agreement provides the Forum with approximately $3.5 million from the German Foreign Office to help strengthen Pakistan's federal system.
University of Alberta and German researchers will tackle oil sands environmental issues
The Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest scientific organisation, and the University of Alberta in Canada have announced plans to intensify their research collaboration, particularly in the areas of Energy, Earth and Environment. On September 29, 2009, the President of the Helmholtz Association, Prof. Jürgen Mlynek, and the President of the University of Alberta, Prof. Indira Samarasekera, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of Ambassador Witschel and other government representatives, in Edmonton, Alberta. The partnership is slated to last for several years and will cover research topics such as how the oil sands deposits of Alberta – the largest in the world – can be used in an environmentally responsible manner.

German Movies in Ottawa
From September 2009 to May 2010, the Goethe-Institut Ottawa will present German Movies at Saint Paul University (Amphitheater, Rm 1124) the second Friday of every month from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. All movies will be shown in German with English subtitles. Free admission.

Germany-South Africa: Let's stay Friends - From 2006 to 2010 and beyond
A new special website is dedicated to showcase the support Germany gives to football projects in South Africa. Germany and South Africa have enjoyed a close partnership for many years. With this in mind, it is no surprise that Germany and South Africa, as consecutive hosts of FIFA Football World Cups, also work closely together in this area.

"World Skills - from Calgary 2009 to Leipzig 2013"
After a neck-and-neck race , Germany officially won the right to host the WorldSkills Competition in 2013. The bi-yearly competition, this year organized by Calgary/Canada, ist attended by 900 young professionals from all over the world participating in 45 skills ranging from cabinetmaking to web design. This year Germany's national team competed in 20 different disciplines and won three gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

The Teacher Acquisition Programme (TAP) is an initiative of the Ministry of School and Further Education of the federal state North Rhine-Westfalia in Germany. The target is to gain teachers from abroad for teaching English as a foreign language and content and language integrated learning in the subjects biology, history and geography. Applicants with a university degree in English, another foreign language, biology, history or geography are welcome.

Step into German Canada is an invitation to learn more about Germany and the German language. Step into German Canada offers linguistic and cultural information on German language and Germany in fun-filled and interactive ways. There are quizzes, games and contests. Step into German Canada is an initiative of the Canadian Association of Teachers of German (CATG), the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT) and the Goethe-Institut Toronto for all Canadian high school students. It is part of the nationwide language education campaign.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 in Germany
It has now been decided which German towns will be hosting the FIFA Women's World Cup matches. The best women players in the world can be seen in nine different cities from Augsburg to Wolfsburg. Angela Merkel, the "honorary team manager", will be leading her team of well-known female personalities in their efforts to drum up support for the tournament.
