On October 3, 1990, Germany finally achieved reunification. The historic occasion had been ushered in on September 12, with the culmination of the “Two Plus Four” talks - a process which had begun in Ottawa seven months prior.

In view of the worsening conditions on the ground, Germany has further increased its pledge of assistance for flood victims in Pakistan. The Federal Government has stepped up its humanitarian aid by a further ten million to currently 25 million euros (approx. 33 million Canadian dollars).

A square goes around the globe
Berlin’s synagogues, the Jewish Museum and the Centrum Judaicum are forming the stages for the 24th Jewish Culture Days in Berlin. From classical music to klezmer, from literature to satire, the 16 events from august 26 to September 5, 2010 illustrate the wealth of facets in Jewish culture. Young cantors open up new dimensions in music that is thousands of years old. In her performances a young jazz singer breathes new life into Jewish folk songs. A photograph exhibition portrays survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants. These are just a few of the events in the festival that reaches its climax with a premiere: the “Long Night of the Synagogues” on August 28.

Germany's Harz Canal System Gains World Heritage Status
A unique medieval water management system that provided pre-industrial power to silver, lead and copper mines through the 19th century in the Upper Harz region of northern Germany has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
